I have never had any German lessons, in school I chose Spanish over German. I can’t say I remember even having a desire to learn German, a language I thought could sound slightly abrupt, until I came to Berlin in May 2008 (for the first time:)). Since then I have tried to pick up on the language by being in Berlin, listening to Germans speak, reading words around the city and the web, watching German films and using my Swedish to guess and try to improvise some speech. But now B (he’s so sweet and thoughtful) has bought me a home language course, until I join a class early next year, German in 30 Days. A riveting story (?), it follows Yuki’s adventures in München. So far she has managed to order a cup of tea on her flight over, ask Frau Glück (her landlady) if she can watch TV in the living room and (!) in her own temporary German zimmer and buy a travelcard to visit the centre of Munich… Today she goes to her first German class. Hopefully in 30 days I will get a basic hang of the language because I want to converse with people, make friends and not feel confused when the lady in the food shop asks me something three times after I’ve paid and think it’s ok for me to say ‘Tschüss’. She got annoyed and dismissed me with a wave of the hand.
